If you are considering a dermal filler treatment for yourself, it is essential to understand what the treatment involves so that you can make a well informed decision. Although this is a summarised guide, your practitioner will be able to guide you through the different steps to ensure that your experience is safe and enjoyable for you.
Before any injectable treatment, you will be expected to attend an initial consultation to discuss your skin, health and the results you would like to achieve. It is common for your consultation to be with the practitioner who will be providing your treatment. They will help you to understand the treatment in detail, as well as timelines for results, downtime and appropriate aftercare required.
If you have any questions or concerns about the treatment, you will have an opportunity to ask your practitioner who will be able to provide peace of mind that your dermal filler treatment will be safe, comfortable, and most importantly, provide the results you want to achieve.
At your initial consultation, your practitioner will provide you with some requirements that will need to be fulfilled before starting your treatment. This may include things like advising you to postpone using certain medications, avoiding alcohol, smoking, or strenuous exercise in the 24 hours before your treatment.
This is purely to allow your facial tissue to be in its most natural state when receiving treatment. Avoiding the items listed above before treatment will significantly reduce the risk of bruising or extending the visibility of potential side effects.
One of the main benefits of this treatment is that depending on the number of areas you’re having, treatments are usually quick. You can expect your fillers to take around 30-45 mins, depending on the filler volume and the size of the treated area. The more areas you have treated, the longer your treatment will take.
When you arrive at the clinic your practitioner will talk you through the steps they will be taking to cleanse, and complete the treatment. You will have further opportunities to answer any questions or express any concerns, which your practitioner will be able to provide answers and peace of mind so that your experience is enjoyable. You will then be escorted to the treatment area, where you will be positioned on a comfortable treatment bed. You can make yourself comfortable and ready for your treatment during this time.
First, your practitioner will cleanse the area being treated with an anti-sceptic solution. Even though your skin may be clean, this is to ensure that no dirt, sweat or any other foreign object is at risk of entering the treatment site, before your injection.
This next step is optional, however, for those with a low pain threshold, it may be required. You will be pleased to know dermal fillers are not considered painful and are described by other patients as feeling like a slight pinch to the skin. If you would prefer not to feel anything, numbing cream can be applied to the treated area to provide ultimate comfort.

Following a cleanse and numbing will be the injections themselves. The needles used to inject the treated area are extremely fine and cause minimal discomfort. Following each injection, we massage the treated area to soothe any discomfort before continuing.
