What to expect from a Dermal Filler Treatment

What to expect from your
Dermal Filler Treatment: Before, During, & After

When it comes to improving facial volume and tackling the early signs of ageing, Dermal Filler treatments have become a popular non-surgical option. Not only are they extremely effective at tackling fine lines & wrinkles, but they also allow patients to enhance facial features subtly, safely and quickly.

At our specialist injectables clinic in London, providing you with peace of mind that your treatment is being delivered in a professional and patient-focused manner is one of our main priorities.

In this guide, our injectable specialists will outline what you can expect before, during and after your dermal filler session to give you peace of mind and awareness of what’s to come. We hope you find the information below helpful in understanding this treatment in more detail.

How to prepare for your Dermal Filler treatment

If you are considering a dermal filler treatment for yourself, it is essential to understand what the treatment involves so that you can make a well informed decision. Although this is a summarised guide, your practitioner will be able to guide you through the different steps to ensure that your experience is safe and enjoyable for you.

Consultation

Before any injectable treatment, you will be expected to attend an initial consultation to discuss your skin, health and the results you would like to achieve. It is common for your consultation to be with the practitioner who will be providing your treatment. They will help you to understand the treatment in detail, as well as timelines for results, downtime and appropriate aftercare required.

If you have any questions or concerns about the treatment, you will have an opportunity to ask your practitioner who will be able to provide peace of mind that your dermal filler treatment will be safe, comfortable, and most importantly, provide the results you want to achieve.

Preparation

At your initial consultation, your practitioner will provide you with some requirements that will need to be fulfilled before starting your treatment. This may include things like advising you to postpone using certain medications, avoiding alcohol, smoking, or strenuous exercise in the 24 hours before your treatment.

This is purely to allow your facial tissue to be in its most natural state when receiving treatment. Avoiding the items listed above before treatment will significantly reduce the risk of bruising or extending the visibility of potential side effects.

What to expect during your treatment

One of the main benefits of this treatment is that depending on the number of areas you’re having, treatments are usually quick. You can expect your fillers to take around 30-45 mins, depending on the filler volume and the size of the treated area. The more areas you have treated, the longer your treatment will take.

When you arrive at the clinic your practitioner will talk you through the steps they will be taking to cleanse, and complete the treatment. You will have further opportunities to answer any questions or express any concerns, which your practitioner will be able to provide answers and peace of mind so that your experience is enjoyable. You will then be escorted to the treatment area, where you will be positioned on a comfortable treatment bed. You can make yourself comfortable and ready for your treatment during this time.

Cleansing

First, your practitioner will cleanse the area being treated with an anti-sceptic solution. Even though your skin may be clean, this is to ensure that no dirt, sweat or any other foreign object is at risk of entering the treatment site, before your injection.

Numbing (Optional)

This next step is optional, however, for those with a low pain threshold, it may be required. You will be pleased to know dermal fillers are not considered painful and are described by other patients as feeling like a slight pinch to the skin. If you would prefer not to feel anything, numbing cream can be applied to the treated area to provide ultimate comfort.

Please make your practitioner aware of this before starting your treatment to allow for them to prepare appropriately.

Injection

Following a cleanse and numbing will be the injections themselves. The needles used to inject the treated area are extremely fine and cause minimal discomfort. Following each injection, we massage the treated area to soothe any discomfort before continuing.

Upon finishing your treatment, your practitioner will then advise you on how best to protect results in a way that will maximise and enhance your desired look.

Aftercare for Dermal Filler Injections

With most injectable treatments, there are a few side effects, although nothing major that won’t subside in the days following your treatment. Dermal filler treatments should always be performed by someone with extensive training and experience that can safely perform the procedure. We would recommend avoiding having your treatment performed by someone without qualification or experience, as you will increase your risk of complications or undesirable results.

The side effects that should be expected following your dermal filler treatment include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising

Side effects often reduce over the coming days and do not prevent you from returning to work or other daily activities. However, staying hydrated will help to alleviate the side effects faster. In addition, the medical professional administering your treatment will be able to provide more information on how to deal with these common side effects.
