Preparing for your treatment

If you are considering a Microneedling treatment for yourself, it is essential to understand what it involves to make a well-informed decision. Although this is only a summary of our recommendations, your practitioner will guide you through the different steps to ensure your experience is safe and enjoyable.

Consultation

Before any skin treatment, you will be expected to attend an initial consultation to discuss your skin health and the results you would like to achieve. It is common for your consultation to be with the practitioner providing your treatment as they will help you to understand the treatment in detail, explain timelines for results, downtime and appropriate aftercare required.

During your consultation, your practitioner will also have the opportunity to go through the recommended course of treatment for the results you desire. For Microneedling, you would ideally need between 3-5 treatments, depending on the skin condition being treated.

If you have any questions or concerns about the treatment, you will have an opportunity to ask your practitioner, who will be able to provide peace of mind that your treatment will be safe, comfortable, and, most importantly, give the rejuvenating results you want to achieve.

Pre-treatment skin care

Before your microneedling session, your practitioner may recommend specific pre-treatment instructions. These can include avoiding direct sun exposure, pausing the use of certain skincare products, and avoiding blood-thinning medications or supplements that could increase the risk of extending the duration of your side effects.

Pre-treatment preparations are purely to allow your skin’s tissue to be in its most natural state when receiving treatment. Avoiding the items listed above before treatment will significantly reduce the risk of bruising or extend the visibility of potential side effects.

What to expect during your treatment

Generally, you can expect a microneedling session to last anywhere from 60-90 minutes. We combine the treatment with low level LED lights. These help with the healing process & boost collagen levels to the skin. It’s important to note that this is an average time, and treatment times may differ from person to person. The duration of your treatment will vary, depending on the area or condition being treated, the specific device used, and the intensity of the procedure.

When you arrive at the clinic, your practitioner will talk you through the steps they will be taking to cleanse and complete the treatment. You will have further opportunities to answer any questions or express any concerns, which your practitioner will be able to provide answers and peace of mind so that your experience is enjoyable.

You will then be escorted to the treatment area, where you will be positioned on a comfortable treatment bed. You can make yourself comfortable and ready for your treatment during this time.

Cleansing the treated area

First, your practitioner will cleanse the area being treated with an anti-sceptic solution. Even though your skin may be clean, this is to ensure that no dirt, sweat or any other foreign object is at risk of entering the treatment site, before your injection.

Numbing

Before your treatment begins, numbing cream will be applied to the treated area for maximum comfort. You will be pleased to know that Microneedling is not considered painful and is described by other patients as feeling like a slight pricks to the skin.

Applying the Microneedling Roller

During the session, your practitioner will carefully roll or stamp the microneedling device over the target area, ensuring even coverage and proper stimulation of your skin. Your practitioner will provide a more accurate estimate based on your unique treatment plan and goals.

Applying Growth Factors to your skin

Although this may not be an option at all clinics, at the Dr Apul Parikh clinic, we pride ourselves on providing the latest and most innovative skin treatments. The idea behind Growth Factors for Microneedling are that they promote wound regeneration, growth of collagen, growth of blood vessels, increase in Hyaluronic Acid (essential in skin hydration) and assist with wound healing.

When applied to the skin, they function as healing agents. They thus boost collagen synthesis, improve elasticity, help with acne scars and pigmentation & are also used for skin rejuvenation.

For more information on Growth Factors, we have put together a guide explaining how Microneedling results can be enhanced with Growth Factors.

Aftercare for Microneedling

Following your treatment, you should be made aware of some minor side effects. It is important for microneedling treatments to always be performed by a practitioner with extensive training and experience that can safely perform the procedure, and minimise the impact of side effects. You should strongly avoid having someone without qualification or experience perform your treatment. This will increase your risk of complications or undesirable results.

The side effects that should be expected following your treatment include:

  • Redness
  • Sensitivity
  • Swelling
  • Dryness & flaking
  • Bruising

Side effects often reduce shortly after treatment and will not prevent you from returning to work or other daily activities. However, resting and staying hydrated will help to alleviate your side effects faster.
