Do SKINVIVE Skin Boosters Hurt? What the Treatment Actually Feels Like
It is one of the first questions people ask, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. Most patients describe SKINVIVE as causing minimal to mild discomfort rather than pain. The sensation is usually a series of small, quick pinpricks with a brief stinging feeling, and the treatment is over quickly enough that discomfort does not have long to build.
That said, comfort is personal, and a general answer only gets you so far. Below is a realistic account of what the treatment involves, what affects how it feels, and what you can expect in the hours afterwards.
Why SKINVIVE Feels Different to Other Injectables
The sensation of any injectable treatment comes down to three things: how deep the needle goes, how many injection points there are, and what is being placed into the skin.
SKINVIVE is delivered as a series of very small hyaluronic acid microdroplets placed into the skin itself rather than deeper beneath it. That shallow placement is the main reason the experience differs from treatments you may have had before.
Compared with Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are placed more deeply and are designed to add structure, which means a firmer product and a sensation of pressure as it is positioned. SKINVIVE involves neither of those things. There is no feeling of the product being moved or shaped under the skin, because it is not doing that job. If the distinction between the two treatments is new to you, our guide on dermal fillers versus skin boosters explains it properly.
Compared with Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Anti-wrinkle injections involve fewer injection points and a very fine needle, so each individual injection is usually barely noticeable. SKINVIVE involves more injection points across a wider area, but each one is shallow and brief. Patients who have had both often say the individual sensation is similar, and that SKINVIVE simply involves more of them. We have covered the comparison point in detail in our post on whether Botox hurts.
What SKINVIVE Treatment Actually Feels Like, Step by Step
Before: Numbing and Preparation
The product itself contains lidocaine, a local anaesthetic, which takes effect as treatment progresses. In addition, a topical numbing cream is commonly applied beforehand and left to work for a short period.
This waiting time is usually the longest part of the appointment. It is worth not rushing it, because properly numbed skin makes a noticeable difference to how the treatment feels.
During: The Injections Themselves
Most people describe a quick scratch or pinprick at each point, sometimes with a mild stinging sensation that fades within a second or two. Some areas are more sensitive than others, and thinner skin tends to register more.
The treatment itself is short. Many patients are surprised at how quickly it is finished, and it is common to hear afterwards that the anticipation was worse than the experience.
Immediately After: What You Will Notice
What Affects How Comfortable Treatment Feels?
Several factors genuinely change the experience, and some of them are within your control.
- Your individual pain threshold, which varies more between people than most expect
- The area being treated, since some regions of the face are simply more sensitive
- Where you are in your menstrual cycle, as sensitivity is often reported as higher in the days beforehand
- Whether numbing was given adequate time to take effect
- How relaxed you are, since tension genuinely heightens the perception of discomfort
- The skill and technique of your practitioner
Why Injector Technique Matters Most
Of everything on that list, the last point carries the most weight. A microdroplet technique relies on consistent depth and placement across many injection points, and that consistency comes from training and experience rather than from the product.
An experienced injector works efficiently, places each droplet at the correct depth, and knows how to pace a treatment so that the patient stays comfortable throughout. If you are weighing up where to have treatment, our guide on how to choose an injector in London covers the questions worth asking.
Practical Ways to Make Your Treatment More Comfortable
A few straightforward things help:
Arrive with clean skin and no makeup so numbing cream can be applied straight away, and allow it the full time to work rather than asking to start early. Avoid alcohol the night before and consider limiting caffeine on the day, since both can increase sensitivity and the likelihood of bruising.
If you take blood-thinning medication or supplements such as fish oil, mention this at consultation, as it affects bruising risk. Never stop prescribed medication without speaking to your GP first.
Tell your practitioner if you are nervous. Knowing you are anxious changes how they pace the treatment and talk you through it, and most patients find the second appointment considerably easier than the first simply because they know what to expect.
When Discomfort Is Not Normal
Mild tenderness for a day or so is expected. What is not expected is severe or escalating pain, pain that worsens rather than improves after the first day, significant swelling, skin that changes colour or turns pale or mottled, or any visual disturbance.
These are uncommon, but they warrant contacting your practitioner promptly rather than waiting to see whether they settle. Any clinic worth attending will want to hear from you and will have a clear process for reviewing you quickly. Our aftercare guidance sets out what to do in the days following treatment.

SKINVIVE Skin Boosters are a quick treatment that most patients find mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. The sensation is a series of brief pinpricks, helped by topical numbing and by the lidocaine within the product itself, and the small bumps and tenderness afterwards usually settle within a day. How comfortable it feels depends partly on you and substantially on the experience of whoever is treating you.
