How to Choose an Injector in London: The Questions Worth Asking

London has more aesthetic practitioners per square mile than almost anywhere else in the UK. That is good news in the sense that you have choice, but it does make the decision harder. Clinics can look polished, marketing can sound convincing, and a treatment can be common enough that it starts to feel like booking a haircut.

The difficulty is that injectable treatments are medical procedures, and the things that genuinely separate a safe, skilled injector from a risky one are rarely visible on a website or an Instagram grid. The good news is that you can find out fairly quickly, simply by asking a handful of direct questions before you commit to anything. Here are the ones worth asking.

Why Choosing The Right Injector Matters More Than Before

The non-surgical aesthetics sector in the UK has grown enormously over the past decade, and regulation has been slower to catch up than most patients assume. Standards of training vary widely, and the difference between a practitioner who has spent years developing their anatomical knowledge and one who completed a short course is not something you can see from the outside.

Regulation is tightening, and the direction of travel is clearly towards higher minimum standards. Until that settles fully into everyday practice, the most reliable protection you have is your own set of questions. A good practitioner will welcome every single one of them.

Question One: Are You a Prescriber, and Will I Meet Them?

Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK. It has to be prescribed for you specifically, by a doctor, dentist, or a qualified prescribing nurse or pharmacist, following a proper assessment.

This is the question that filters out a surprising amount of the market. Some practitioners administer treatments prescribed remotely by someone the patient never meets, which falls short of current professional guidance. Current guidance is clear that prescribing should follow a face-to-face consultation with the prescriber.

So ask plainly: are you the prescriber? If not, who is, and will I be meeting them before treatment? If the answer is vague, that tells you something useful.

Question Two: What Products Do You Use, and Are They Licensed in the UK?

There are several botulinum toxin products licensed for use in the UK, and a wide range of dermal filler brands. There are also unlicensed products circulating in the grey market, which is where a meaningful number of complications originate.

A practitioner should be able to tell you exactly which product they are using, why they have chosen it for your treatment, and where it came from. They should be comfortable showing you the packaging. At Apul Parikh Clinic we are open about the fact that we work exclusively with Allergan products, and we have written about why we only use Allergan products for our injectable treatments if you would like the full reasoning.

If a practitioner will not name their products, that is worth paying attention to.

Question Three: What Training Have You Completed?

Almost every injector will say they are trained. The more useful question is what that training actually involved and how recently it was updated.

You are looking for depth in facial anatomy, an understanding of pharmacology and product science, and specific training in recognising and managing complications. Aesthetic medicine also moves quickly, so ongoing education matters as much as the initial qualification.

Who Trains the Trainers?

One shortcut here is to ask whether your practitioner teaches other practitioners. Training others requires a level of anatomical understanding and clinical judgement well beyond what is needed to deliver a routine treatment, and it usually indicates recognition from peers rather than just from patients.

Dr Apul Parikh sits on the Faculty of the Allergan Medical Institute, trains injectors internationally, and has published research on the use of HArmonyCA in the neck. If you are curious what that means in practice, we have explained what separates his approach to training from more traditional courses.

Question Four: What Happens If Something Goes Wrong?

This is the question most people feel awkward asking, and it may be the most important one on the list.

Complications are uncommon in experienced hands, but they are not impossible, and what matters is whether your practitioner is equipped to manage them. Ask what the plan is if you experience an unexpected result. Ask whether they hold hyaluronidase on site, which is the emergency reversal agent for hyaluronic acid fillers and a prescription-only medicine in its own right. Ask how quickly you would be able to see them.

A confident, specific answer is reassuring. An answer along the lines of “that never happens” is not.

Question Five: Will I Get a Proper Consultation and Assessment?

A consultation should involve a full medical history, a discussion of what you are hoping to achieve, an honest assessment of whether the treatment you have in mind is the right one, and clear information about risks and aftercare.

Sometimes the right outcome of a consultation is being told that a different treatment would suit you better, or that no treatment is needed at all. If you are not sure which route makes sense for your concerns, our guide comparing anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers is a helpful starting point, and you can also read about what to expect before, during and after treatment.

Question Six: What Does Aftercare Look Like?

Good practice does not end when you leave the clinic. You should know who to contact if you have concerns, when your results will settle, and whether a review appointment is included.

Clear, written aftercare guidance should be standard rather than something you have to request. Ours is available in our complete aftercare guide for anti-wrinkle injections.

Red Flags Worth Taking Seriously

A few things should give you pause regardless of how good everything else looks:

  • Pressure to book on the day, or time-limited discounts on medical treatments
  • Treatments offered in homes, salons, or at social events
  • Reluctance to name products or show packaging
  • No medical history taken and no written consent
  • No clear answer about complication management
  • Any suggestion of treating someone under 18 for cosmetic purposes, which has been a criminal offence in England since October 2021

A Note on Botox and UK Advertising Regulations

Botox is a brand name for a prescription-only medicine containing botulinum toxin. Under UK advertising regulations, prescription-only medicines cannot be promoted or advertised directly to the public. Throughout this blog, we use the term “Botox” in an informational and educational context only, as it is the name most people recognise when searching for anti-wrinkle treatments.

The suitability of any prescription treatment, including Botox, can only be determined during a face-to-face consultation with a qualified prescribing practitioner. At Apul Parikh Clinic, all treatment options are discussed in detail during your consultation so you can make a fully informed decision.

Choosing The Right Injector Is Worth the Extra Ten Minutes

Choosing an injector in London comes down to six straightforward checks: who prescribes, what products are used, what training has been completed, how complications are handled, whether the consultation is thorough, and what aftercare is provided. None of these questions is difficult to ask, and a practitioner worth trusting will answer all of them without hesitation.

If you would like a consultation with a practitioner who trains other injectors and publishes clinical research in the field, Dr Apul Parikh sees patients at our clinic in London Victoria. Get in touch to arrange a consultation and we will talk through your concerns, your options, and whether treatment is the right choice for you.
